In 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines with his fleet on April 21st during their journey back to Spain from the Maluku 'Spice' Islands. Magellan planted a cross and baptized the local rulers Carlos and Juana in honor of the Spanish king and his mother, marking the beginning of Spain's colonization and Christianity in the country. The original cross was believed by the people of old to have miraculous healing powers so they started chipping it away. Because of that, the government officials was prompted to supposedly encased it in another wooden cross made from tindalo. It is now housed in a small chapel.
